Yesterday, the Indonesian volcano: Sinabung, produced one of it's largest eruptions since it's awakening in 2010 🌋 . The eruption on Feb 19, happened very suddenly but familiarity with the volcano's behavior enabled successful evacuation of the area. As of right now there has been no confirmed fatalities or serious injuries. Thankfully, the eruption occured during daylight. . However, the sheer size of the eruption column is fairly terrifying. The column is estimated to have punctured into the stratosphere at its maximum height spreading ash over the area. You can see just some of the effects of ash-fall in the later pictures. . Mount Sinabung (Gunung Sinabung in Indonesian) had not produced explosive eruptions for hundreds of years prior to 2010. Since then, there has been more frequent explosive activity in 2013, 2014 and 2016. In 2016, pyroclastic flows produced (like those in Image 3 from yesterday!) killed several people in nearby villages, so the volcano is certainly hazardous. . Because of its known erratic, explosive behavior, when it first showed signs of an imminent eruption, people were able to evacuate somewhat. Thankfully the eruption contained itself mostly to a small area. Even the pyroclastic flows produced did not make it very far. . The volcano will continue to be monitored and I plan on another post soon reporting the aftermath of the eruption. We must always consider what people living on the flanks of these giants have to deal with after an eruption such as this. . 📸 sources: time, telegraph, phys.org, express, cbsnews, weathernetwork . . #volcano #science #nature #geology #earthcapture #earthscience #geoadventure #discover #explore #news #sinabung #eruption #poweroftheplanet #active #outreach #sciencecommunication #stem #stemeducation #scicomm #education #hazard #danger #pumice #ashfall #indonesia #volcanology #monitoring #naturalhazard

Happy Valentine's Day Science! 💙 Here's to many more years of running smoothly and making awesome seafloor maps! . This video is a compilation of bathymetry data of the submarine Havre Volcano system on the Kermadec Ridge, 400km North of New Zealand. 🌋🌏 @utas_earth_sciences @havrevolcano . Bathymetry is the study of mapping the ocean floor. This video shows 3 bathymetric layers: 1) ship based bathymetry of the whole volcanic system (the main caldera crater is 5 km wide!), 2) high resolution AUV bathymetry from the autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry @woodshole_ocean taking over 20 days of mapping, and 3) elevation differences between 2002 and 2015 bathymetry showing us the locations of new lava and mass wasting deposits! . When that aeolian stratigraphy is on point 👌 🏞🏜🌬 ~~~ Desert formed sandstones, Valley of Fire, Nevada . The rocks of the Valley of Fire State Park are a mixture of sandstones and limestones that intermingle in a spectacular display of rock folds and rainbow patterns. . Here is just a close up of one of the sandstone blocks where you can see millions of years in action. The sandstones here are dated back to the Triassic where modern day Nevada was (again) a vast desert. . Millions of years of sedimentation of wind-blown deposits constructed these beautiful layers of red sediments within sand dunes that were eventually compacted into sandstones and exposed a many million years later. . #geology #science #nature #earthcapture #earthscience #geoadventure #discover #explore #geoscience #rock #rocks #rocksofinstagram #scicomm #outreach #sciencecommunication #photography #landscape #naturephotography #landscapephotography #view #horizon #bluesky #stratigraphy #lifeofageologist
Lucky enough to look out of my window RIGHT over Half Dome, Yosemite!! 😍🏞 I want to climb again sooo bad! 😭🔗 ~~~ Sierra Nevada, California. . The flight from Seattle to LA is one of my favorite routes to take and no matter which side you're on, you get incredible views of the entire West Coast Cascades and then the Sierra Nevada! . Half Dome is one of the most obvious geological features on the planet. Once part of a huge granitic intrusion of magma in the Sierras during the Cretacous period (>90 million years ago!), the feature is now distinct with its rounded sides and a shear face of rock. . It now looks like a dome cut in half and rises many 1000s' ft above the floor of Yosemite Valley and village. It is a world renowned climbing location offers some of the most challenging routes in the world not for the faint of heart! . Not to worry though, it is possible to hike up the side on a guided path hiked daily by many people. Descent to the deep... Capturing footage of the ROV Jason reaching the volcanic seafloor of the SW Pacific! 🚢🌋 . An ROV is a remotely operated vehicle commonly used in submarine exploration. If you've been watching Blue Planet II, then you'll recognise one from "The Deep" episode. . Jason @woodshole_ocean is an ROV that I've used to visit underwater volcanoes, to sample and film them. Here we placed a GoPro in a special pressurized capsule on an instrument on the seafloor to capture Jason in motion! This must also be the perspective of fish 😅🐟🐠 . If you look closely, you can see red lasers on it's front. They look like it's eyes, bit they are two completely parallel monochromatic focused beams of red light spaced exactly 10cm apart. That way we can essentially use the spots of the lasers as a 10cm ruler when looking at anything on the seafloor. . The arms (manipulators) are used to used as grabbers to take samples from rocks. Also look out for the several cameras over the front of the ROV 📸 . Being able to use instruments like this is definitely one of the highlights to working out at sea! . . #submarine #oceanography #geophysics #volcanology #blue #sea #deepsea #stem #technology #seafloor #robot #robotics #stemeducation #scicomm #education #outreach #sciencecommunication #photography #ROV #nature #earthcapture #earthscience #geoadventure #discover #explore #science #geology #volcano #lifeatsea
This still remains my all time favorite photo of my time at sea researching submarine volcanoes #seascienceisfun ~~~~~ SW Pacific . This was a platform that was sent down to the seafloor from the research vessel. From there, the submarine could place rock samples into the boxes to be sent back up to the surface. . The yellow cylinder is a buoyancy aid which was remotely controlled to gain or loss buoyancy depending on whether you wanted the platform to sink to the bottom or rise to the surface. Pretty neat!! . Our technician decided to liven it up by giving it the Lego-makeover. 😂😂 Its little head popping out of the water looking excited about it's new samples was the highlight of every day at sea! . . #science #nature #geology #earthscience #discover #explore #ocean #oceanography #geophysics #volcanology #blue #sea #deepsea #stem #technology #seafloor #robot #robotics #stemeducation #scicomm #education #outreach #sciencecommunication #photography #horizon #pacificocean #travel #research #lifeatsea

Throwback to waking up with a view! 😍🏞🏕 Camping East side of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. . Post some rock climbing in Yosemite, we got chased East out of the Tioga Pass by an incoming snowstorm. It chased us to our camping location: The Hot Springs. Rapidly setting up a tent in the middle of the night amidst a snowstorm, we then abandoned the tent and lept into the hot springs with a beer. . It's always odd when your body is at 40°C but your hair is frozen on end 🤔🔥❄ The storm still blowing, we decided to go to bed. The next morning, the storm had passed and this was the view we were met with.... . Deploying autonomous robots to map the seafloor. And away she goes! @woodshole_ocean 's AUV: Sentry 🚢 . Sentry is an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle used to map the seafloor in extremely high resolution (less than 1 meter!!). This could be used to find indivudal rock features, bacterial colonies, black smokers and even fine details of a shipwreck! . Being autonomous, it is not remotely operated, instead it has a set plan programmed into it's system which it then follows. This can be updated by signaling to Sentry as it constantly feeds back it's data stream. . It can also be used to attach other geophysical surveying instruments and to measure water chemistry. She really is a nifty little robot; extremely helpful for when we were mapping volcanoes out at sea in the SW Pacific! . . #science #nature #geology #earthcapture #earthscience #geoadventure #discover #explore #ocean #oceanography #geophysics #volcanology #blue #sea #deepsea #stem #technology #auv #seafloor #tech #robot #robotics #stemeducation #scicomm #education #outreach #sciencecommunication #lifeatsea #pacific

Same volcano 🌋 Different seasons. Winter 🌧 vs. Summer 🌞 ~~ Diamond Head, O'ahu, Hawai'i 🏝⛰ ~~ . Diamond Head (locally known as Lē'ahi) is a tuff cone just outside of the city of Honolulu and Waikiki. It is no longer an active volcano, but was only active half a million years ago in comparison to the rest of O'ahu which is 2 - 4 million years old. . In the past few years, the seasons have been a little topsy turvy. But here is a comparison between January 2018 vs July 2017. It's amazing what a few weeks of heavy rain can do to a landscape... A journey through a field of Giant Pumice Blocks up to 30ft across (!) on the floor of a submarine volcano! 😮👌🌋 . This footage comes from a submarine ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle); you can see a photo of the ROV a few posts back. @woodshole_ocean @utas_earth_sciences . The pumices themselves are from the 2012 eruption of Havre Volcano, a large submarine caldera on the Kermadec Ridge, New Zealand. The blocks average 1-2m in diameter. But some were as big as cars are even small houses!! . The blocks themselves cover a 35km2 area and possibly more!
Yesterday, Mount Mayon Volcano in the Philippines erupted a series of lava flows forcing 1000s to evacuate. 🌋 PC 📸: news sources ⬇ . Mount Mayon is probably one of the most impressive volcanoes on our planet in terms of its very stereotypical, near-perfect, cone-like structure and how it looms over the nearby towns in the Albay province! . It is a very active stratovolcano with many eruptions in human history. One of the most devastating of these was in 1814 which claimed over 1200 lives. The last eruption of lava was in 2014. . An ash plume was observed 2 days ago and then last night in the Philippines, lava began to flow down the mountain-side heading for the nearby towns (see in pictures the proximity). You can also see in the daylight profile of Mayon just how far previous lava flows have reached! This morning the ash plume continued to erupt and they are monitoring the lava flows very closely. . Many saw the glows of the lavas flows at night and immediately evacuated their homes. This will be watched carefully over the next few days to assess just how hazardous the eruption may be. . We hope that evacuations are successful and that authorities are taking the necessary steps to prepare for the eventually of a dangerous eruption! . A 3D high-resolution bathymetry map of a submarine volcano: Havre Volcano in the SW Pacific 😮🌋🌊 . This was collected using an AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle) called Sentry. Sentry scanned the seafloor with a 1 meter spatial resolution meaning that we can pick up features on the seafloor smaller than a person!! . The 2015 bathymetry map was lain over the topographic depth to render a 3D perspective of the submarine system. The caldera is 5km across and 500m deep with a bottom depth of 1540m below sea level. The walls of caldera are mostly 900m below sea level. . The red color shows elevation added to the previously acquired bathymetry of the volcano in 2002 from ship based sonar-bathymetry. Essentially this shows the elevation gain from lava erupted between 2002 and 2015, most being erupted during a large eruption of 2012! You can see the results of this in our new paper (see Twitter link in bio)! . You can see one big new dome in the top, a series of smaller domes along the back rim and some lava flows that erupted out of the caldera walls and flowed onto the caldera floor. . It's amazing what technology can reveal about the seafloor nowadays!! Some reflections on this morning's events in Hawai'i: The False Missle Threat that put the state into panic for 38 minutes.➡ . This is just a complete honest reflection, I've not edited these or written a script as I just wanted to share my thoughts on this morning and where we go from here. . Thank you to everyone who immediately started getting onto social media to help provide people with information they had that other may not have. . I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this whereever you are and when and what you first heard of this. . As I say, my views are my own and so I welcome criticism of any of my comments, but before somebody jumps on someone's remarks and attacks them, please be a decent human being and just consider what they went through during those 38 minutes of uncertainty this morning. This addresses (I hope) very few people out there... . The state of Hawai'i carries on with their day now. I'm in the lab doing analysis, I went and bought some lunch at the shops as many others were. People are already back at the beach and it is really a beautiful day even by Hawaii's standards. . But I can guarantee you that nobody here is going to forget and brush off the events of this morning with great ease. Aloha to all. 💙🏝 . #hawaii #oahu #reflection #news #newyear #aloha #missile #hawaiimissilethreat #falsealarm #thoughts #thankyou
Sampling volcanoes on the seafloor is no easy feat, but with a little help from our (to be) Supreme Robotic Overlords, it's possible! 🌋🤖 . An ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) is controlled from a surface ship and control room and can be sent underwater to explore the seafloor. The benefit of this over manned submarines is the ability to pack lots of technology into the same space: cameras, sampling methods, instruments and software. . Here, the ROV is going to retrieve a temperature probe that it placed into volcanic sediment. The objective was to measure heat flow near hydrothermal vents in a recently active volcanic system (Havre, 2012). This @woodshole_ocean ROV is called Jason 🙌 . It's rare to get pictures of ROVs in action on the seafloor without a #RobotSelfie , but we mounted a #gopro onto another platform that we sent to the seafloor to place our samples on. . As suggested by @scientistselfies , here are my #SciComm resolutions 🔎📚📃 . 1) To make myself more publicly visible on my account - 🤓Over the last 18 months, there has been a lot of concern regarding trust in scientists and the perception that scientist are "bought out" to publish data that supports their beliefs and political agenda. The way to break these false claims is to show the human behind the scientist to increase our trust and sincerity. It is crucial for the public to see why scientists "do what they do" and that we love what we do. Social media is a great way to break these perceptions to show the public the person and life behind the scientist... to an extent. 🤗😉 . 2) Regular volcanic updates on recent eruptions - I like to post about a large range of earth science topics, but as this is a primarily "volcano page" 🌋 I will post updates on recent eruptions or about ongoing worldwide eruptions more frequently to boost awareness of the power and activity of our planet! . As a sidebar, this #scientistswhoselfie was taken when emerging into the light after crawling through a lava tube in Hawai'i with @brett_halsey_ . The 2018 Volcano Season kick-started with a bit of a surprise! Kadovar Volcano, Papua New Guinea erupted despite no record of ANY historical eruptions! 😮🌋 . The small island off the coast of Papua New Guinea's main island was a small volcanic edifice covered in vegetation. Late last week, a small continuous cloud of ash began to erupt from it's summit "for the first in forever" it seems. . There is no definitive record of an eruption of this volcano in modern history and it has always been considered inactive until now, which took many by surprise. . However there is possibly a record from the 17th century by English explorer William Dampier who noted "burning fire islands" around this region. . 500 residents were immediately evacuated last week as there was no knowledge of how bad this could be! Scientists at the PNG volcano observatory continue to monitor the volcano, but it still continues to emit ash. . Once the eruption subsides, the volcano will likely be a site of interest to volcanologists trying to establish it's past erupting record! .
