Here’s what nobody else will tell you about parenting...it’s the most important job you’ll never get quite right. We shouldn’t give up but do the best we can, forgive ourselves when we mess up, come with love and empathy every chance we get and most importantly regulate our own emotions. I know people will look at this quote and say well there are all kinds of punishments for adults. If you don’t pay your taxes you’ll go to jail, and if you try to hurt someone you’ll be arrested. Sure that’s the case with extreme behavior. What about when we say or do things unacceptable toward our loved ones? We scream at our spouse, shame our child or are rude to our sibling? As adults do we have privledges taken away or sent to our room? No, not at all. Weren’t we taught as children how to behave? Didn’t our parents punish us when these things happened? Didn’t it TEACH us? Why not? How come we didn’t learn how to behave? Also what if we were punished now? Would punishments keep us from acting those ways again? Probably not, but what would have taught us? Kindness, love, empathy, and compassion all taught by a self regulating individual. That would have taught us how to be in this world. Because modeling is proven to be our best teacher just look how I behave as a mom, my default is the parenting I learned from my folks. No punishment can teach anything, no consequence can make a child learn intrinsically how to behave. We can only model decent behavior to get decent behavior. #laparents #parenting #parentingcoach #love #beautiful #quote #humanity #mom #momlife #motherhood #dad #dadlife #fatherhood #consciousparenting #naturalparenting #peacefulparenting #peaceandparenting #attachmentparenting #handinhandparenting #teen #tween #toddler #baby #children #kids #cosleeeping #babywearing #breastfeeding
“Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” -Scott Adams ❤ . . Love this quote! Reminds me that no act goes unnoticed or without effect... specially by our children. Sometimes we become so focused on being recognized by other adults and feel discourage when we don't receive validation. However, it's the little people who watch us and imitate us. My reward is when I catch my kid's doing kind acts. Then I think to myself, "I must be doing something right." 😊 - Via @letsplayparents🙌 . . If you haven’t heard Johnathon Hari discuss the idea of addiction being the opposite of connection you might want to seek out his TED talk. Through a new study involving rats he debunks the idea the rodents will choose heroin over water in laboratories. In fact rats who have an engaging environment with fellow rats to interact with never touch the heroin water. Conversely, rats with stale lonely environments choose heroin. Therefore, it can seem plausible adults who have learned how to connect well with others, and are securely attached will choose connections and humanity over drugs. Maybe when we talk about addiction being hereditary we can conclude that parental figures who were addicts didn’t share connections with others and therefore never really connected with their children, and passed on this disconnection as opposed to passing on some gene. It isn’t so much about the dopamine release experience with the drug use as it is about having a more engaging and fulfilling alternative. If this is true we can conclude that Connective Parenting is a safeguard against addiction. If we connect deeply with our children, create a secure attachment by refraining from manipulations we protect against later addictions and produce humans who crave connection instead of addiction. One step further our parenting approach can determine the health of the relationships our children and our children’s children will share with others in adulthood and who they will choose to connect. I chose Connective Parenting. What about you? Yeah, I let my kids tantrum, sure I allow them all their feelings, and I don’t flinch when they say “I hate you mom”. In fact it doesn’t even phase me anymore. I give hugs when my kids say and do awful things and I try my best to be calm. Why the hell do I have to give a complete dissertation as to why this is how I chose to raise my girls? Why isn’t anyone questioning the parent who bribes their kid to do each and every little thing, or the parent who threatens, shames and ridicules? How can a thinking society question the idea of coming with compassion? How is it we are so rooted in the ideas of punitive measures and manipulations? Are we that close minded? Are our ideas around parenting and actually humanity that antiquated? This way of being with the my girls feels right, moral and so much better than how things felt before. My girls are happy, kind, productive people who are thriving. I know I’m doing something right. #laparents #parenting #parentingcoach #love #beautiful #quote #humanity #mom #momlife #motherhood #dad #dadlife #fatherhood #consciousparenting #naturalparenting #peacefulparenting #peaceandparenting #attachmentparenting #handinhandparenting #teen #tween #toddler #baby #children #kids #cosleeeping #babywearing #breastfeeding

I’ve been reading Alfie again! Myth of the Spoiled Child. His book crushes the conventional parenting wisdom. He dismantled it one unsubstantiated belief at a time. Something he discusses is Helicopter Parenting and the idea that this “type” of parenting is rampant and is exhibited by over involved parents who do too much for their children. First off there’s no evidence that doing too much for your children has negative affects, in fact the research shows quite the opposite. When parents do for and help their kids it creates healthy and productive humans. But what’s most interesting is this approach is nothing more than control. The typical conventional way in which most of us were parented with threats, bribes and consequences. On the surface these folks are involved in every aspect of their child’s life, leading one to believe the children are being “coddleled”. The confusing part these parents are always present, but what they aren’t is REALLY present, there’s no connection and the relationship is fractured. Most children of HP have little or no autonomy and feel a huge sense of being controlled. I was definitely this mom, always there and yet didn’t have a clue as to how to connect on a deeper level with my girls. It’s interesting because many liberal minded folks fall in this category. Individuals who have their heart in the right place and want what’s best for their kids, but can’t let go of the control aspect probably because they don’t know exactly what else to do. #laparents #parenting #parentingcoach #love #beautiful #quote #humanity #mom #momlife #motherhood #dad #dadlife #fatherhood #consciousparenting #naturalparenting #peacefulparenting #peaceandparenting #attachmentparenting #handinhandparenting #teen #tween #toddler #baby #children #kids #cosleeeping #babywearing #breastfeeding
