Today’s spring-like January afternoon had us out planning our garden! Grayson and Caroline lugged shovels, and later a wagon, out into the woods, and then spent nearly two hours digging, dumping, squishing, pretending, and, finally, planning where they wanted to put their gardens! Grayson wants to grow “carrots, potatoes & apples” and Caroline has requested “chocolate” 😂 I feel ya, girl! It’s all about balance, right?! 😆

This girl. She’s going to move mountains. She lives by her own rules and has an unbridled enthusiasm for the littlest things. She’s as sassy as they come and loves with all her heart. • • This afternoon, she taught me to play Catan. I didn’t quite catch all the rules (she had a LOT), but we had to pack up and change location after each turn, call out Bingo! after rolling the dice, and apparently she gets to steal as many of my pieces as she wants. • • #thesearethedays

It's PENGUIN time! 🐧Throughout the week we'll share a few of our favorite activities to go along with the theme. We'll also be looking for the ideas you share. Remember to tag @fantasticfunandlearning and use #FFLideas so we're sure to see them! Each week I'll also try to share a couple of low-prep activities to kick off the week. That way even if you are crazy busy you can join in the fun. LOW-PREP IDEAS... For this week try these... 1) WADDLE LIKE A PENGUIN: Watch a short video clip about penguin movement. Then spend some time waddling like a penguin. Make it more fun by doing a freeze game to music. Waddle while the music is playing. Then freeze when the music stops. 2) THINK & WRITE: Make a list of things your child already knows about penguins to activate prior knowledge. Then write down a few questions to learn about this week. Find nonfiction books (Penguin book list available on Fantastic Fun and Learning) or watch some YouTube videos to see what you can learn along the way. 3) EAT FISH LIKE A PENGUIN: Okay we won't really eat raw fish, but have a little fun with goldfish snack crackers or eat fish for dinner one night this week. If you don't already have the free printable January activity calendar, pop over to www.fantasticfunandlearning.com and be sure to get on our email list. Each month we'll send out a new activity calendar so you will know what themes are coming and get some activity ideas to get ready in advance. Can't wait to see what you have to share this week! #winteractivities #penguins #earlylearning #preschoolactivities #iteachprek #iteachk #homeschool #homepreschool #preschoolathome #homeschoolpreschool #preschoolfun #playathome #preschoolteacher #preschoolactivity

Happy National Popcorn Day! 😁 The kiddos are still feeling a little sick, but they cheered up when they found out it was #nationalpopcornday. I created a couple of popcorn themed activities for them and they loved them! 😊
@target gets me again! I’m not sure what my plan is yet, but I’ll think of something! ❤️🌹🍫💌💗💜💘 #valentinesday #february #homepreschool
🙈HIDE the ANIMALS🙈 also known as "the activity I set up last week that's still sitting on my dining room table" 😂 This is a CLASSIC Kate sensory bin and one that we do on repeat 🌀 because it is just.so.easy and so much fun ‼️ I take my 31 qt storage bin and put in my semi clean muffin tin 😬 Maybe yours is a little nicer looking than mine 🤦🏻‍♀️ I also set in a small container filled with rice (our standard, constantly reused 2lbs bag) 👍🏻 and put animals into each cupcake spot ⭐️ Kate's job: hide the animals and she LOVES IT 🙌🏻 Kate loves to hide and bury things so this sensory bin really speaks to her 🎉 Once she buries the animals, she find them, acts surprised 🤣, and then I dump the rice back into the container 🙋🏻 to restart the sensory bin 💥 It's a timeless winner ⏳ Couple of reasons why this doesn't end in a messy disaster: 1️⃣ Kate is a sensory bin expert and has been trained up well (see link in my profile for more info on introducing and teaching sensory bin etiquette) 2️⃣ Put a giant beach towel under the bin of you are really nervous - it'll catch the extra bits 3️⃣ It's rice so even if there is an accident it's still not as big a mess as when my kids eat spaghetti so 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thank goodness for vacuums 😂 But 99% there just isn't much of a mess because it all goes back to teaching, introducing, and building their confidence / understanding of how this "toy" works 👍🏻 I started playing "Hide the Animals" with Kate around 21 months old and it's still a hit today at age 3 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Check out the link in my profile for more sensory bin information 😘😘
SNOWFLAKE SEGMENTATION Developing phonemic awareness is a crucial component to later reading and writing success, but don’t worry. Many early childhood activities like singing songs, reciting nursery rhymes and more help kids with these important skills. There’s a full continuum of phonological and phonemic awareness skills that kids progress through. Today we’re sharing an activity from our snowflake theme lesson plans to help kids with segmentation. Use our free printable snowflake segmentation mats and these steps to practice with your kids one on one or in a small group. Click the link in our profile for the full activity tutorial and step by step ways to work on segmentation with your preschoolers and kindergarteners. https://www.fantasticfunandlearning.com/snowflake-segmentation-printable-mat.html JOIN IN: Each weekday of 2018 we're sharing a theme based idea for playful learning. Did you keep a stash of baby toys once your little ones grew out of them? We put a bunch away in storage for when babies are visiting, but I keep these in the toy rotation and they are still well-loved with my two. They are a couple of the most versatile toys we have and I am constantly finding new uses for them. • • I was all set to get them out of the crawl space last night, but my husband was down there doing some preventative spraying for spiders and said “Holy cow- it’s a good thing I sprayed. There were a bunch of huge ones just sitting on their nests!” 🕷🕸 • • And I have been crawling in and out of that area almost daily. 😱 #nope #justnope Safe to say I won’t be going back in there until he goes back and assures me they are all dead. #andmaybenoteventhen
One of our home-preschool activities. Placing colored blocks on the matching colored spaces. Auggie had already placed all of the blocks you see stacked here without assistance before this video was taken. I was amazed! I guess I have to make it a bit more challenging next time!! #preschoolhomeschool #homepreschool #colorsorting #preschoolactivity
I could not be more excited to say we have started a preschool routine with Auggie and it’s amazing how much toddlers learn in a short amount of time! How cute are these Dino number cards I found on Pinterest? All my homeschooling mommas with tots this was a free download and I cut and laminated them myself! Counting begins! #preschoolhomeschool #homepreschool #homeschool #earlylearning
I hosted my daughter’s playschool today. I chose frogs and the letter “F” for our focus. 🐸 We made “frog hop cups”, read books featuring frogs, learned the “Five Green and Speckled Frogs” song, and we would’ve played leap frog... but they lost interest. 😆 I love being part of casual mom-led preschools. I’ve always done it this way and have loved this time teaching and playing with my kids and their little buddies. . . . . . . #playschool #preschool #homepreschool #momschool #toddlercraft #toddlercrafts #frog #preschoolcraft #preschoolcrafts #simplecraft #kidcraft #kidcrafts #simplecrafts #artmom #craftymom #craftymommy #craftsforkids #letthembelittle #childhoodunplugged
Today, I introduced our Antartica Unit study with a sensorial play on Penguins in snow ❄️🐧 We made DIY Moon Sand to act as our snow. This Moon Sand recipe only calls for two ingredients- flour and baby oil. I used 8 cups flour, which I already had and 1 cup baby oil, I bought mine from @dollartree. Mix well, that’s it! I’ve stored it in a lid sealed plastic container- I’m curious to see how many uses we’ll get out of the same batch. I know what you’re thinking “that stuff looks too messy for me”. The littles did make a mess but I live with five kids 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m ok with mess as long as the clean up is easy and it was! It just took my little floor vacuum (which is done daily anyhow) to clean up. Best part of this Moon Sand recipe is that it did not leave any residue on floor or clothing, mom win! #preschool #preschooler #preschoolathome #homepreschool #homeschool #homeschooling #homeschoolfun #preschoolactivities #toddleractivities #prek #prekinder #prekindergarten #earlyeducation #earlychildhoodeducation #earlydevelopment #earlylearning #learnthroughplay #learningthroughplay #montessoriathome #sensoryplay #sensorybin #kidsactivities #motherhood #momsofinstagram #momsofig #mamaofmany #sahmlife #sahm #momlife #raisingmytribe

SNOWFLAKE BLOTTO ART Blotto art projects fascinate kids (and adults too!). Each one is unique, and opening up the new design each time is always a fun surprise. To make snowflake blotto art, we used a squeeze bottle to squeeze out half of the design for our snowflake. This was a great opportunity to show some of the facts that we learned about snowflakes (that they have six sides or points) We had to add in a little math thinking and decide how many lines we needed to draw in order for their to be six once we folded the paper in half. These are great discussions for early learners! After folding the paper in half we had fun seeing how our snowflake designs turned out. Each one is unique just like a real snowflake. And because we love glitter, we embellished our designs with a bit of silver glitter glue to make them sparkly. Homeschooling for the win because I’m pretty sure a “Fish that Farts Forever” project for the letter F would have raised a few eyebrows at a traditional school. 😆 #lifewithboys #boymom #guidedarrows #happylearners #notears #toocoolforschool #childledlearning #milessmiles #homepreschool
So, if you saw my stories yesterday, I mentioned that we found these wonderful felt play sets from target. I originally thought we’d save this dramatic play activity til February, but realized that we will need to begin crafting and mailing our Valnetine’s Day gifts SOON, due to a homeschool exchange, so why not bring it out now? We had such a fun morning discussing postmen & pretend playing! Now both G & C are very excited to create their own Valentines and mail them at the REAL post office later this month! *Note their cute writing! #ayops #ayearofplayingskillfully
Our homeschool days are fairly casual. We try to do arts and crafts daily, building blocks, pretend play, and lots of reading. We have just started letter work with my 5 year old and I am so glad I waited with him, because he’s picking it up so easily now. • • One of his favorite activities is to watch me make letters on the board and then copy them. This week, we learned L, F, and E so he practiced copying them this morning. Nothing too exciting, but he is getting so much out of it! • • You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. You don’t need a bunch of pinterest-worthy activities. Simple tasks like this work! Sing songs, read books, play games. #theyonlygetonechildhood
