To this is added a solution containing💫 #potassium_iodide , #sodium_thiosulfate , and #starch . There are two reactions occurring in the solution.💫 In the first, slow reaction, #iodine is produced: H2O2 + 2I− + 2H+ → I2 + 2H2O In the second, fast reaction, iodine is reconverted to 2 iodide ions by the #thiosulfate :🔮⚡ 2S2O32− + I2 → S4O62− + 2I− After some time the solution always changes #color to a very dark blue, almost black. When the solutions are mixed, the second #reaction causes the triiodide to be consumed much faster than it is generated, and only a small amount of is present in the dynamic equilibrium. Once the thiosulfate ion has been exhausted, this reaction stops and the blue colour caused by the triiodide – starch complex appears."

- Double tag the pic - Tag your friends Snowy Hen and chicks (burrr!)- Sempervivum tectorum, are evergreen perennial succulents native to southern Europe and northern Africa. They grow close to the ground with leaves formed around each other in a rosette. The "hen" is the main plant, and the "chicks" are the offspring, which start as tiny buds on the main plant and soon sprout their own roots, taking up residence close to the mother plant. This species has a long history of human cultivation and medicinal use. The young leaves and shoots of this species are edible! #nofilter #winterfoliage #Portland #Oregon #weeds #herbs #wildcrafting #science #edible #urbanecology

- Double tag the pic - Tag your friends In recent years, detecting and studying planets in other solar systems has been a popular subject. Compared to their parent stars, planets are very tiny, so how exactly do scientists find planets in other solar systems? There are a few different methods. The first method used in astronomy was the radial velocity method. This method, although it was the first, is very difficult to use. The method uses the Doppler Effect of light. Simply stated, the Doppler Effect explains the fact that the wavelength of light can change depending on how an object is moving. If an object moves away from you, its wavelength is stretched or redshifted. If the object is moving towards you, its wavelength is compressed or blueshifted. In a nutshell, this is the Doppler Effect. Scientists can use the Doppler Effect to determine if a star is moving towards or away from us. Furthermore, we know that both stars and planets rotate about their centre of mass. Although a planet is tiny compared to a star, it still does exert a gravitational pull on the star. The star moves about the centre of mass, and so it slowly moves towards or away from us at different times. By studying the motion of the star, and the shifting of its light over time, scientists can determine if a planet or planets are orbiting the star. This method is, however, quite biased towards more massive planets. More massive planets pull on the star more strongly, and so they are much easier to detect. Thus this method is far more successful in finding Jupiter-like planets than it is in finding Earth-like planets. #villain #laboratory #neildegrassetyson #extraterrestrial #lgbtpride #yellowbrickroad #learningisfun #knowingmeknowingyou #scifi #sciencegeek

- Double tag the pic - Tag your friends In the last few decades, one of the strangest and most amazing discoveries of our Galaxy has been the discovery of high velocity clouds of hydrogen gas (HVC). These high velocity clouds have been measured to have velocities of around 70-90 km/s, and they can have masses of millions of suns. HVCs are mostly found in our Galaxy's halo, but they have also been observed in nearby galaxies. HVC likely played a significant role in the evolution of our Galaxy. HVC account for a significant fraction of normal matter in our Galaxy's halo, and they also continue to add material to the disk of our Galaxy. This new material helps to add new star forming material to our Galaxy's disk, which would otherwise have used up most of its usable star forming material. The exact origin of HVC is still not quite understood and their origin is under debate among astronomers. Some HVCs are likely the result of gravitational interactions between the Milky Way and its two satellite galaxies, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. Yet the origin of others is still not fully understood. It's possible that others are material that was ejected from the Milky Way at a much earlier time and are now being pulled back into the Milky Way by the Galaxy's gravitational pull. Seen in this stunning image above, Mystic Mountain is a section of the Carina Nebula, a region of active star formation in the southern constellation Carina. #learningisfun #relief #vancouverisawesome #dayatthemuseum #penquins #periodictable #experimentation #collagraph #spacetime #physics

- Double tag the pic - Tag your friends This is a new rotifer (new to my collection... not new to the science world) I found in SF under the genus Aspelta (comment below if you have other suggestions or if I’m just plain wrong). Rotifers range from 100-300 microns (or 0.01 - 0.03 cm)... basically, use the 400x lens on your microscope to get a good view. They eat ciliates and live in freshwater ponds. They are NOT: parasites found in tap water found in spit living in your body pathogenic (cause disease) * * * #science #biology #microbiology #microorganism #rotifer #pond #watersample #sanfrancisco #goldengatepark #lake
