Stuart Police Chief David Dyess (left) and Martin County School Board Chair Christia Li Roberts, acting as a young dating couple with a child, visit the mortgage and realty booth during Dare to Care: A Poverty Simulation on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018 at the Indian River State College Chastain Campus in Stuart. Dyess participated "to get a better understanding of the needs of those in need," a practice he said will use when encountering people when he is on duty. Other volunteer participants, totaling about 75 people, included commissioners, law enforcement officers, religious leaders and other local dignitaries. The event was hosted by House of Hope, Martin County Community Foundation, Mary's Shelter, and the United Way of Martin County. "There's a perception that poverty doesn't exist in Martin County," said Lauren Mustelier, House of Hope volunteer manager, even though 41 percent of Martin County households earn less than $26,689 per year, according to the United Way ALICE Report. #TCPalm #Poverty #Volunteer (Photo by Leah Voss @vossvisuals)
